I met Ute in 1970 when I was an au pair girl in England for the first time. What I remember of her at that time is that she had a really hard life. She was always fighting to put food on the table and provide everything the five children needed for school, their uniforms etc. I remember that nevertheless, every time the ice cream van came up Priest Hill she would buy an ice cream for her five children and also one for me. She always considered me as her daughter and that was really meaningful for me and helped me because when I came to England fo the first time I couldn't speak a word of English. Her family had the patience to to help me with the language and to try to understand what I was expressing. We have always kept in touch somehow. The last time I stayed at Ute's house was in 2018. At that time we used to walk down to the cafe on the corner opposite the library to have a cup of coffee and a Danish pastry together. I am very pleased that on 23 December I could talk to her. Her voice was lively and sweet as usual. She told me that she was leaving the house but I promised to go and visit her in the home and take her out for a cup of coffee and a Danish pastry. I rememer she talked about her family and how thankful she was for the five children she had. I would like to finish by saying "with lots of love" as that was the way she used to end her email messages to me.
